Nutritional Biotechnology research encompasses many ways of creating and innovating with specialty and alternate crops, with nutrition in mind. From creating falafels with pigeon peas, to designing functional microgreen food systems.

Plants contain very powerful therapeutic compounds. Research explores these compounds, naturally occurring or enhanced through environmental manipulation strategies, and fundamentally apply them toward the design of products for human consumption or therapeutic application.

Research often deploys metagenomic approaches to spearhead such discovery process. A COIMBRA fellowship took Bianke to KU Leuven in 2018, to further explore properties of products these enzymes can make.

Sustainable thinking and doing will become critical skills for the future – initiated through interesting discussions at the QS World Merit Awards 2022 on general campus sustainability engagement.

Global conversations about a sustainable future, developing the mindset toward actioning. Topics such as Zero Hunger (virtual event hosted by UC Davies), and Climate-Smart Agriculture (workshop hosted by Bianke Loedolff at Stellenbosch University) are key components for food and nutrition security.

The skills of learners need to accommodate for an ever-changing world. Education will need to prepare learners to actively participate in a society where problems are increasingly complex and innovation skills are essential. Interesting new subjects that may assist learners with such skills include Biotechnology and genetics.

Using ‘Frontiers in Young Minds’ as a science communication platform and simplifying scientific concepts such as nutrition and drought, and alternate future food crops, children get to learn much more about the world they live in.
